Whose Image is On You? Discovering Our True Allegiance and Dignity

By Morning Star Baptist Church of Shreveport

Are you struggling to find your place in a divided world? In a culture that constantly pushes us to choose sides, it’s easy to lose sight of where our true value and loyalty belong. In our latest sermon, “Who’s Image is On You?” we explored Jesus’ brilliant response to a political trap in Matthew 22:15–22—a moment that reveals not only the limits of earthly power but also the profound dignity God has stamped on each of us.

The Main Point: God’s Image Defines Us

When the Pharisees and Herodians tried to force Jesus into a political corner—demanding He pick between loyalty to Rome or loyalty to His people—Jesus refused the trap. Instead, He held up a coin and asked, “Whose image is on this?” When they answered, “Caesar’s,” Jesus famously replied, “So give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s” (Matthew 22:21, NIV).

The message? The government may claim what bears its image, but only God can claim what bears His. You and I are stamped with the image of God (Genesis 1:27). Our ultimate worth, purpose, and allegiance belong to Him—not to any party, platform, or policy.

Why This Matters Now

As election season approaches, the world shouts for total allegiance to political sides. Social media, news, and even friends and family may try to force us into binary thinking: “Are you for us or against us?” But Jesus shows us that our highest loyalty isn’t to Caesar—or any human system—but to the God who created us, saved us, and calls us His own.

Action Steps: Living as God’s Image-Bearers

  • Examine Your Allegiance: Ask yourself, “Do my choices reflect God’s values, or am I just following the crowd?”

  • Engage Publicly Without Compromising Privately: Vote, serve, and speak out—but never at the expense of your conscience, truth, or dignity.

  • Honor God’s Image in Others: Stand up for the vulnerable, seek justice for all, and treat every person with the respect only God’s image can demand.

  • Let Faith Guide Your Actions: When faced with tough decisions, pray for wisdom and let your ultimate loyalty be to Christ, not to fear or party lines.

Conclusion: A Prayer for True Allegiance

Heavenly Father,
Thank you for creating us in Your image and giving us unmatched dignity and purpose. In a world that demands our allegiance, help us remember that we belong to You first. Give us wisdom to navigate politics and public life with grace, courage, and conviction—never surrendering our conscience or our calling. Teach us to honor Your image in ourselves and everyone we meet.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
