Are you living planted on purpose, or simply occupying space? At Morning Star Baptist Church, we recently explored this life-changing question. Drawing from Luke 5:1–11 and Luke 13:6–9, Pastor Theron Jackson challenged us to embrace the fruit of surrender and discover God’s purpose for our lives and our church.
Main Point: Surrender Is the First Fruit Jesus Seeks
Too often, we measure our faith by what we know or what we can accomplish. But as the story of Peter teaches us, Jesus isn’t looking for performance, perfection, or even production—He’s looking for surrender. Before He changes neighborhoods, He changes the hearts of those He’s called. When Peter, against all his experience and expertise, says, “Nevertheless, at your word I will,” a miracle unfolds—not just in the water, but in Peter’s heart.
“Every fruitful life begins with a Savior who lovingly steps into an ordinary boat and simply says, ‘Follow me.’”
Action Steps: Living Planted on Purpose
How can you respond to Jesus’ call and bear the fruit of surrender in your everyday life?
Trust God beyond your experience. Like Peter, let Christ’s word outweigh your own expertise and past disappointments. When God asks you to step out, say, “Nevertheless, at Your word, I will.”
Let go of self-reliance. The greatest obstacle to discipleship is often not rebellion, but self-sufficiency. Surrender is saying, “I don’t have all the answers, but I trust the One who does.”
Serve for the sake of others. Fruit is never produced for the tree itself. Ask yourself: “Are my neighbors, my family, my community better off because I’m here?” Use your gifts and resources to bless others.
Stay open to transformation. Jesus doesn’t just change our circumstances—He transforms us. Be willing to let go of old plans and step into the new calling God has for your life.

God has planted you on purpose—for a purpose. He hasn’t placed you in your family, workplace, or community by accident. The question is not whether you believe in Jesus, but whether you are truly letting Him lead your life. Will you surrender?

Heavenly Father,
Thank You for loving me before I ever deserved it, for stepping into my boat and calling me to follow You. Help me to surrender my plans, my pride, and my self-reliance. Cultivate in me a heart that is willing to say, “Nevertheless, at Your word, I will.” Grow in me the fruit of surrender, so that my life may bear fruit for others and for Your glory. Use me to bring hope, healing, and justice wherever You have planted me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
