He Came Back: The Real Story of Resurrection
**A Reflection on Mark 16:7 and John 20:19-21**

We've been preaching resurrection like it's an escape hatch—like Jesus leveled up and left the struggle behind. But that's not what happened at all.
The angel didn't say Jesus was heading to a palace. He said, "Go tell his disciples—and Peter—that he's going ahead of you into **Galilee**."
Not Jerusalem, where the temple stood and religion had structure and visibility.
Not Rome, where power was enforced and decisions were made.
**Galilee.** The margins. The hood. The place everyone else was trying to get out of.
## Resurrection Isn't Relocation—It's Return
There's a story about a man who grew up in a neighborhood everyone else wanted to escape. Small houses. Cracked sidewalks. Street lights that flickered more than they shined. The kind of place people survive but don't celebrate.
Everyone told him: *If you make it out, don't come back.*
And he made it out. Education. Opportunity. Access. He climbed every ladder—corporate, social, and otherwise. Moved to a better zip code. Built a better life.
Years passed. Then one day, he found himself driving back through that old neighborhood. He slowed down, turned the corner, rolled past the same block he used to run through as a child.
There it was—the house. Same chipped paint. Same leaning porch.
But what stopped him wasn't the paint or the porch. It was the mailbox.
Even though it was faintly visible, half-scratched off, he could still see his last name on it.
He realized something profound: **He had left the neighborhood, but the neighborhood had never let go of him.
So he bought the house back. Rebuilt it. Restored it. Not because it made sense, but because it still had his name on it.

**Jesus came back to this world because this world still had His name on it.**
Three Truths About the Resurrection
1. **He Returns to the Margins**
The resurrected Christ bypassed both religion and empire and returned to the margins—to the people who were struggling.
We've built a theology that always imagines God moving us *up*—up into heaven, up in our money, up in our connections, up in status, up in comfort, up in visibility.
But resurrection moves in a different direction. **It moves back toward responsibility.**
Galilee wasn't just a place. It was where faith had been practiced without resources. Where hope had to survive without infrastructure. Where people had to believe without validation.
And Jesus said, "I'll meet y'all there.
God is not intimidated by broken systems. God is not absent from overlooked places. He sees the bombed places just like He sees the broken places.
**God specializes in those places.**
Some of us have spent years trying to graduate out of our Galilee—trying to get to Rome, trying to get to Jerusalem. But resurrection declares: **"I am already ahead of you in the places you've been trying to avoid.
2. **Grace Speaks to You Before You're Restored**
The text says, "Go tell his disciples—and Peter."
Peter wasn't just anyone. He was the rock who broke under pressure. The spokesperson who said, "I'll never deny You. Everyone else can desert You, but it's me and You against the world, Jesus."
And in one night, he became the very thing he said he would never be.
That's not just failure. **That's fragmentation.**
The worst kind of failure isn't when you disappoint others. It's when you contradict yourself—when you deny the version of yourself you believed was true.
But watch this: **The text names him before he's restored.**
Grace speaks to you before you've resolved yourself.
This is offensive to our logic. We think you fix yourself, *then* you come back. "I'm gonna put down this drinking, this smoking, this struggle—*then* I'll go back to church."
But the kingdom says, "Come, and I'll fix what you can't fix by yourself."
Because it may not just be the smoke and the drink. What's *behind* the smoke and the drink is what we need to take care of. There may be trauma leading you there. And just putting it down may be temporary. But **when He changes you, that's transformation.**
**Your failure is not the end of your story. It's the place where grace starts speaking the loudest.**
3. **He Walks Into Locked Rooms**
John 20 tells us that after the resurrection, the disciples were hiding in a locked room "for fear of the Jewish leaders."
Let's not sanitize that. They weren't praying. They weren't praising. **They were traumatized.**
They had watched their leader die. They'd failed publicly. And now, if He was dead, they were potential targets.
So they did what people do when they've been hurt: **They locked everything down.**
Here's the mistake we make: We assume resurrection automatically fixes fear.
But these disciples believed in the power of God and were *still* afraid. Which means **you can believe in the power of God and still struggle with the pain of what you've been through**—even on Easter Sunday.
But here's the shout: **Jesus shows up anyway.**
He doesn't knock. He doesn't wait for an invitation. He just walks in and stands in the middle.
**There are some places in your life you don't have to have faith to open yet.** You've got a Savior who will walk right into the middle of your fear, your trauma, your locked-down heart.
And when He shows up, He doesn't hide His scars. He says, "Look at these hands. Look at this side."
**Resurrection doesn't erase history—it redeems history.**
The scars are still there. Because God doesn't pretend it didn't happen. He transforms what it means. The scars don't just mean it happened—they mean **you got through it.**
And then He says something shocking:
**"As the Father sent Me, so I send you."**

He Sends You Anyway
Wait—us? The traumatized cowards locked in this room?
They're still processing. Knees still knocking. Unsure.
**And He sends them anyway.**
Let me say this to somebody who doesn't have it all together: **Thank God, He sends you anyway.**
Calling doesn't wait for emotional stability. Mission doesn't wait for perfection.
**He sends scarred people to heal a scarred world.**
Every healer is a wounded healer.

This Demands a Response
Resurrection is not something that just happened 2,000 years ago. **It's something happening right now.**
There's a block people gave up on—boarded-up houses, broken windows. Developers called it unsalvageable.
One man from that block decided to come back. He didn't build a new condo. He fixed the old porches. Painted the old fences.
**Because when one person who belongs there decides it's still worth it, the atmosphere can change.**
Resurrection is God looking at your boarded-up life and saying, **"I ain't finished with this yet."**

This is not a moment for observation. **This is a moment for decision.**
Resurrection demands a response. You don't get to hear this and stay the same.
- **Peter** means you are included.
- **Galilee** means you are needed.
- **"Peace be with you"** means you are invited.
You don't need more information. **What you need is surrender.**
Because when you really understand that He didn't just rise—He *returned*—there's only one response left:
**"My life, my love, my all—here it is, God. Everything."**
He returned for broken places. For broken people. For fragile people. For unfinished people.
**He returned for you.**
And when you realize that, there's only one thing left to say:
*Thank You that when You were calling our names, You said mine too.*
*Thank You that You didn't forget about me.*
*Thank You that You chose to send me anyway.*
Not because I got it together. But because **I got together with You.**
And when I get together with You, You'll get it together in me as I go.
